Forest School
Our Aims
Our Forest School programme aims to provide children in Reception to Year 2 with regular opportunities to learn, explore and develop in a natural outdoor environment. Through carefully planned experiences, children build confidence, resilience, independence and a sense of responsibility while developing a deeper understanding of the natural world. Forest School activities are linked to children's learning in school and support their physical, social, emotional and cognitive development through hands-on, practical experiences.
How Forest School Happens
Children attend Forest School sessions regularly throughout the year at Saplings, a local woodland area a short walk from school. Sessions are led by our qualified Forest School teacher who plans activities that complement and enhance children's learning in the classroom. The programme takes place in all seasons, allowing children to experience and observe changes in the natural environment over time. Appropriate risk assessments are carried out and children are supported to take part safely while learning to assess and manage risks for themselves.
What Forest School Looks Like at Tetherdown
Forest School sessions are child-centred, engaging and exploratory. Children may take part in activities such as den building, nature identification, storytelling, creative arts using natural materials, tool use under close supervision, environmental investigations and collaborative problem-solving tasks. They are encouraged to ask questions, make discoveries, take appropriate risks and develop practical skills. Through regular visits, children form a strong connection with the outdoor environment, develop positive relationships with their peers and adults and experience learning in a meaningful and memorable way.
