Headteacher January News

Dear Parents and Carers

After conducting extensive marketing research, I’m excited to introduce a new monthly feature where we shine a spotlight on different aspects of our school. As the leader of one of London’s top schools, I’m incredibly proud of what we offer our children. While you may hear snippets of good news here and there, I want to give you a fuller picture of the exceptional opportunities your children experience every day.

This month, we’re kicking things off with an inside look at the incredible PE and sports provision that helps our children thrive! Carry on reading below for all the details.

A Year of Sporting Success and Growth

Group of Tetherdown pupils waving in PE kitPE (Physical Education) at Tetherdown has continued to flourish under the dedicated leadership of Coach Da Silva, with the recent addition of Coach Vieira, further strengthening our provision. With a strong focus on both competitive and inclusive sports, our PE program continues to evolve, ensuring that every child has access to exceptional opportunities to stay active, develop skills, and build confidence.

Rising to the Challenge: Competitions and Achievements

PE coach with Y4 & 6 football team Since September 2023, Tetherdown has made remarkable strides in its PE and sports provision, earning well-deserved recognition amongst Haringey schools. Our commitment to both inclusive and competitive sports ensures that every Key Stage 2 child has the opportunity to participate in external sporting events—an initiative that is already delivering fantastic results.

The increase in inter-school competitions has fostered collaboration across year groups, as seen in our recent tennis tournament, where Year 4 and Year 6 pupils joined forces, triumphed in their matches, and proudly brought home two trophies. This success is just one example of how our sporting initiatives inspire confidence, teamwork, and excellence.

Beyond tennis, we have also seen impressive performances in tag rugby tournaments and indoor sportshall athletics. More of our children are not only participating in these competitions but also excelling, reinforcing our reputation as a school that values both competition and inclusivity.

So far, we have competed in an impressive number of events across multiple disciplines, strengthening Tetherdown’s position in Haringey as a school that champions both sporting excellence and broad participation. We look forward to building on this momentum, ensuring even more children can experience the joy and challenge of competitive sport.

Championing Inclusivity in Sport

Tetherdown pupils wearing equal access to sport medalsAt Tetherdown, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to thrive in PE and sport, regardless of ability or background. This dedication was proudly recognised with the 2024 Equal Access to Sport Award—a testament to the inclusive environment we continue to foster. Our PE provision is not just about competition; it is about ensuring every child has access to sports through festivals, events, and varied activities, allowing all children to develop a lifelong love of movement.

Dancing to Success: A PE and Sport Highlight

Group picture of Tetherdown dance pupilsOne of the standout moments of the 2023-2024 academic year was the fusion of our PE dance lessons with the Haringey Dance Festival. Our Year 5 children dazzled audiences with their Strictly Come Dancing-inspired performances, showcasing the impressive skills they developed in their PE lessons.

Adding to the excitement, the children also had the unique opportunity to learn and perform a choreographed dance piece at the festival, taught by a former Tetherdown pupil. This special connection made the experience even more memorable, highlighting the lasting impact of our school’s commitment to both the arts and physical education.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Footballers

PE coach with Tetherdown girls football team Girls’ football at Tetherdown has seen a remarkable surge in participation, supported by inspiring role models.

Group photo of 2 Y6 pupils at book signing with England and Arsenal woman team captains

More recently, two lucky Year 6 pupils had the incredible opportunity to attend a book signing with England and Arsenal captain Leah Williamson. Accompanied by Ms Gillingham and Coach Da Silva, this experience reinforced the power of female role models in sport, inspiring our young footballers to dream big and aim high.

A Growing Club Provision

Beyond competitive sports, our club provision has expanded dramatically. We now offer sporting opportunities from Reception upwards, with inclusive football for all year groups, tag rugby, athletics, rounders, and multi-sports.

Our extracurricular program continues to grow, and with the flexibility to introduce new sports, we remain committed to providing a varied and dynamic offering. This ensures that every child at Tetherdown can explore new interests, develop skills, and experience the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Making Waves: Year 4 Swimming Success

Year 4 children have worked extremely hard in their swimming lessons, striving to meet national curriculum expectations while building essential water safety skills. Every child has earned a certificate for their achievements.

As part of our continuous improvement, we have reviewed our swimming provision and will be moving Year 4 swimming lessons to a new venue in Finchley. This change will enhance the overall experience, and we look forward to sharing further updates later this term.

Enhancing Playtime Through Leadership and Creativity

Playtime at Tetherdown is evolving, thanks to Coach Da Silva’s expertise in play and leadership as a Playworker. Our Year 6 Sports Leaders have been trained to lead games and activities as part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) program, ensuring that break times are structured, engaging, and active.

Using loose parts resources, they create opportunities for creative and inclusive play, making sure that all children benefit from a fun and dynamic playground experience.

Skating Towards Confidence: Olympic-Themed Skateboarding Workshop

Last year, children were thrilled to take part in an Olympic-themed skateboarding workshop, introducing them to an exciting new sport.

Children from Key Stage 1 and 2 had the chance to learn new skills, build confidence, and develop their balance and coordination, all while having fun alongside their peers. This dynamic experience not only introduced many to the sport but also encouraged resilience, determination, and teamwork.

Celebrating Success: Recognizing Teamwork and Sportsmanship

At Tetherdown, recognition is at the heart of our philosophy, and our weekly BBB assembly is a key moment to celebrate PE and sport. Each week, a Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 class that has demonstrated outstanding teamwork is awarded the eagerly anticipated Team of the Week (TOTW) trophy, which reflects our Tetherdown values.

Additionally, in PE lessons, we recognise individual achievements through our PE Stars awards, celebrating children who exemplify sportsmanship, dedication, and effort. These moments of recognition inspire our children to strive for their best—both individually and as part of a team.

A Premier League Moment: Our Pupils Take the Spotlight

Tetherdown pupil serving as a mascot at the Arsenal vs Manchester United FA cup fixtureExcitement reached new heights beyond the school gates as some of our pupils had the incredible opportunity to serve as mascots at the Arsenal vs. Manchester United FA Cup fixture on January 12th. Amongst them was Riley (Year 6), who plays for the U11’s Football Plus team as part of Arsenal in the Community, a program that promotes social awareness and provides playing opportunities for young people.

Tetherdown pupil serving as a mascot at the Arsenal vs Manchester United FA cup fixtureRecognised for his outstanding behaviour, work ethic, and commitment, Riley was selected by his coaches for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The match was particularly meaningful as the Arsenal team and mascots wore the white ‘No More Red’ kit, a powerful initiative by Adidas and Arsenal aimed at tackling youth violence. Riley was one of ten participants chosen from various community programs, and walking onto the pitch at Emirates Stadium alongside footballing icons was an unforgettable moment.

What’s Next? Exciting Opportunities on the Horizon

Looking ahead, there are plenty more exciting sporting opportunities on the horizon. We’re currently in discussions with the Archery Club, so watch this space! Additionally, we are working hard to regain access to the Thames Water Field, ensuring that our children have even more opportunities to train and compete in an environment that maximises their potential. This year, we're taking learning outdoors with an Outdoor Adventure Activities project, combining geography and sports as children develop their orienteering skills in Highgate Woods.

From the sports field to the swimming pool, from the dance floor to outdoor adventure, our PE journey is one of energy, inclusivity, and achievement. With so much progress already made, we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

COMMUNITY

Playground Supervision Reminder for Parents of Y2, Y3 and Y4

We have observed that some children are being left unaccompanied in the playground between 8:30 and 8:50 am. Please be reminded that during this time, an adult must be responsible for supervising your child. The only exception is if your child is attending choir, and independent travellers, where a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) will be monitoring them.

If you are unable to stay, we kindly ask that you arrange for another adult to supervise your child. During this time, we have noticed children arriving on scooters and engaging in active games such as running, which can pose a risk. Please remember that our playground is shared by vulnerable groups, including older grandparents and carers and young children.

We kindly ask that you encourage your child to remain close to you to ensure everyone's safety and comfort. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our playground a safe and welcoming space for all.

Parking Issues on Grand Avenue at drop off

Cars parked over driveways

We kindly ask for your cooperation regarding parking on Grand Avenue, particularly in front of our neighbours’ driveways. Recently, we have received concerns from residents who are feeling increasingly frustrated, especially as some parents dismiss the issue by saying, “It’s just a few minutes.” However, as you can see, there are often several cars causing blockages, preventing residents from leaving their homes.

This does not align with our school’s values of kindness and respect. We kindly remind everyone not to park across driveways or on the zig-zag lines, as these areas must remain clear for safety and accessibility reasons.

To help manage the situation, we will be requesting the traffic warden to visit regularly to ensure compliance. We truly appreciate your support in making drop-offs and pick-ups smoother for everyone, including our neighbours. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Message from Community Police

Car crime has increased around the roads near Fortis Green. Please ensure your car is securely locked and keep your keys away from the front door.

Spare Clothes Request

The children are having a great time playing, often getting muddy in the process! We regularly provide a change of clothing and kindly ask that you wash and return any borrowed items.

If you have any spare jogging bottoms, t-shirts, or tops that you would like to donate, we would greatly appreciate them. Thank you for your support!

Products containing nuts (including for staff as some may also have allergies) must not be brought into school under any circumstances.

Considerate Driving and Parking Please!

If you must drive to school to drop off your child(ren) please consider our neighbours when parking near the school.  We have received complaints that some parents are parking across driveways and blocking house owners in.  It would be far healthier for children if parents could park a little way from the school and walk or scooter to school.  Scooters may be stored at school.  We do not have bicycle storage

Gentle Reminders

Reporting Absences and Pick-up

Reporting Absence

We always require absence information, including unplanned absence, to be reported daily before 9am.

  1. If your child is absent please call the school office before 9am.
  2. Leave a clear message with your child’s full name and class and a brief reason for the absence (e.g. religious holiday).
  3. Unwell pupils: If your child is unwell, we ask that you report your child as off ‘sick’ and briefly describe their sickness (e.g. temperature, headache or has vomited etc). By describing your child’s sickness this will enable the school to track and manage a sudden increase in occurrences of the illness and identify whether we have a localised outbreak of the illness (e.g. virus).

Reporting Pick-Up

If your child is going home with someone different to their regular person collecting them, please remember to communicate arrangements via the admin email before 2:45pm stating your child’s full name and class and who is collecting them.

Please do not email teachers as they are unable to check emails during the teaching day.

Extra Curricular Club Cancellation

Extracurricular Club Cancellation

Recently, one of our extracurricular club providers needed to cancel their club. Communications are sent to families as soon as we are made aware of cancellations.

Please can families note the process below for any future club cancellations. This information is a standing item in our newsletter and on our website clubs and activity camps page. Thank you in advance.

  • If your child's extracurricular club at the end of the school day is cancelled by the provider, parents are advised to make alternative pick-up arrangements for their child and to notify the school office via email of the new arrangement no later than 2:45pm. Parents should not assume that the Tetherdown after-school club can take their child following a club cancellation if they cannot make alternative pick-up arrangements.

  • Children who normally attend the Tetherdown after-school club directly after the cancelled extracurricular club (e.g. tennis) can go straight to after-school club at the end of the school day, however you will be charged accordingly for this session via ParentPay.

Children Leaving Tetherdown

If you are planning on leaving Tetherdown it is important that you inform the school as soon as possible. Please fill in the destination form which can found on our School Forms & Links page.

Medicines in School

As a reminder that medicine cannot be given to your child to bring into school. The school can administer prescribed medicine only (the parents form on our website must be filled in). Forgotten Items

The school does not accept forgotten items. We aim to promote independence and responsibility in our children. This includes snacks and packed lunches, water bottles, PE kits, instruments etc. We can accept medical and reading glasses. If a child has forgotten their lunch one will be provided and will be charged via your ParentPay account.

Unhealthy Treats

We are a healthy school and as such we kindly ask that children do not bring in sweets or cakes/biscuits to hand out to their friends on their birthday. A class book donation is always much appreciated. We will share your book-gift with the class and insert a special book plate to mark the occasion of your child's birthday.
