Headteacher September News

Dear Parents and Carers

We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year, and I’m truly impressed with how well the children are settling into their routines and embracing our high expectations. Their positive behaviour and eagerness to learn have really stood out.

Highlights of the Month

Field Day

We’ve had an action-packed month, and one of the standout moments was our Field Day. A special thank you goes to Ms. Gillingham, our Deputy Head, for organizing the event and bringing in Sam the Juggler to entertain us all. I also want to extend my gratitude to the parents who shared their excitement for the year ahead with me. For more details on the event and photographs….

Vasiliou Family Spotlight

Last week was an exciting one for the Vasiliou family! Gabriel (Y5) took the stage in An Inspector Calls at the Alexandra Palace Theatre, and it was a proud moment for all of us to see one of our own shining so brightly. With such talent, there’s no doubt he has a future in film and theatre.

Later in the week, Anna (Y3) had the unique opportunity to step into the role of headteacher for the afternoon, making several important decisions. Be sure to check out her newsletter—I was particularly inspired by her choice of a gold suit, a true example of power dressing!

Just a Few Important Reminders

Safeguarding

  • Please ensure you have read the recent letter regarding tutors. In light of the tragic events in Stockport, we are now enforcing stricter protocols for adults entering the building without the proper checks through the office. You can find the safeguarding letter that was sent out by clicking here.
  • Unfortunately, we had an incident this week when one of our independent Year 6 students was followed on their way to school. Please stay vigilant and report any concerns. This has been reported to our community police.

A Reminder for Our Community: Keeping Our Children Safe

Thanks to your generous donations, the Friends of Tetherdown have provided new signs to help ensure the safety of our children. We kindly ask all parents to remember the following:

Please do not park on the zigzag lines or in front of our neighbours’ driveways.

These areas must be kept clear so our children can safely walk into school. Maria (Y4) said “Hopefully will mean that I feel more safe, and I won’t get run over”.

If you are asked to move your vehicle, please do so courteously. Our request is made with the sole intention of keeping our children safe and respecting our neighbours, who need clear access to their driveways.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in making our school environment safe and welcoming for everyone.

Seeking Your Feedback

This week, I sent out a letter and survey link about playgrounds and play, as we begin our exciting journey with the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme.  Please click this link for the survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SSLXHQJ

I’m thrilled to share that all our staff will be receiving training on how to create outstanding play experiences in our November Training Day.

Your responses to this baseline survey will be invaluable in helping us shape and measure the impact of the OPAL programme.

Later this autumn, keep an eye out for two more surveys. The next, in October, will focus on developing high-quality talk (Oracy), and in November, we’ll be seeking your feedback on our school lunch provision. Your input is crucial as we continue to improve and grow.

Supporting our school……

A Huge Thank You to Marta Levens.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Marta Levens, a dedicated parent in the Y1 Dragonflies class, for her incredible support in providing art supplies for our children. Marta has gone above and beyond, tirelessly reaching out to local art shops, who have responded with a phenomenal number of supplies. Thanks to her efforts, we can continue to nurture and support the creativity of our children. We truly appreciate everything she has done for our school community.

Celebrating Emily Clarkson's Marathon Fundraising Effort

I'm privileged to work with Tetherdown’s supportive team. Since our September INSET, many staff have contributed fantastic ideas to marketing and fundraising for our school.

I would like to take a moment to congratulate Emily Clarkson, our Reception Teacher, who is going above and beyond by running the London Marathon and raising money for the school.

Please support Emily's incredible effort by clicking on the link: Emily Clarkson is fundraising for Friends of Tetherdown . Emily Clarkson is fundraising for Friends of Tetherdown (justgiving.com)

Friends of Tetherdown Fundraising Initiatives

Friends of Tetherdown will continue to raise funds in various fun and engaging ways to support several key initiatives, including: The Outdoor Play And Learning program, playground landscaping and storage, non-fiction humanities books and resources, our new PSHE curriculum and IT devices.

Your support in all these efforts will greatly benefit our children and enhance their learning experience.

My Afternoon as Headteacher by Anna Age 6

On Friday, 20th November 2024… I got to be the headteacher for the afternoon, and it was so much fun!  I carefully planned my outfit – a gold suit to help me make the powerful decisions. The first thing I noticed was how happy everyone was. This school isn’t just a place to learn—it's also a place where people smile a lot. When I walked around, I saw that the children in their classes were listening and learning really well. Everyone was super nice to me and said hello, which made me feel special.

When I was walking by the photocopier, I noticed some papers lying around. I think the teachers might need to be a bit tidier there. During lunch, I saw that some children were dropping tiny bits of food on the floor. Maybe they should be more careful, so the school stays clean.

I went outside to check on the playground, and most of the kids were playing nicely. I gave some Headteacher stickers to the children who were listening well at the end of playtime. I reminded everyone to be careful when playing football, especially when they take power shots, because we don't want anyone to get hurt.

I met some of the teachers too. Mr Sobratty told me he wished he had longer lunch breaks, and Ms Jones wants her class to keep walking on the left side in the hallway. I also visited the office where Ms Robson and Ms Lewis work hard to help everyone. They had a fly in their office that was bothering them, so I told them to turn off the lights so the fly might leave.

One of the best parts of my day was giving out the Headteacher Hot Chocolate Awards.  I used my bubble machine to make bubbles for the winners, and it was so much fun! I also had a nice drink of squash while I told Ms Etan she should go home and put on her PJs to relax with a cup of tea after a hard day teaching.

I learnt that Ms Moss, who takes care of the money for the school, also looks after Lucy, the school dog. Lucy likes to lick a lot! I didn’t know that Ms Hughes is an artist until I found out she painted the door to my office.

To finish off my day, I read "Ten Little Monkeys" to the Year 1 Dragonflies. Being a headteacher is a lot of work because you have to talk to many people, solve lots of problems and go to meetings, but the good news is that you still get a tea break!

Anna’s parents kindly bid for the raffle prize to be the headteacher for an afternoon at the summer fayre organised by Friends of Tetherdown! The money raised from this raffle prize will be used to buy non-fiction humanities books for all the children at Tetherdown.

Anna

UPDATES AND LOOKING AHEAD

Volunteering at Tetherdown for Parents and Carers

Dear Parents and Carers

We are reaching out to invite volunteers to join us in supporting our children and staff here at school. We would greatly appreciate any help you can offer on Fridays, either from 10:35-11:35 or 2:00-3:00. You are welcome to volunteer weekly in your chosen time slot or biweekly, depending on your availability.

Volunteer activities may include 1:1 reading with children, helping with resource management, assisting with displays, and more. To ensure consistency for our students, we kindly ask for a commitment of at least half a term.

Please note that it doesn’t have to be a parent who volunteers—grandparents, aunts, uncles, or other family members are also very welcome!

If you are interested in volunteering, please email Mrs Capone.

Your support would make a significant difference, and we look forward to welcoming you to our team. Thank you for considering this opportunity to contribute to our school community.

Best wishes

Mrs C Capone

OFFICE REMINDERS

PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE A NO NUTS SCHOOL

Products containing nuts (including for staff as some may also have allergies) must not be brought into school under any circumstances.

Considerate Driving and Parking Please!

If you must drive to school to drop off your child(ren) please consider our neighbours when parking near the school.  We have received complaints that some parents are parking across driveways and blocking house owners in.  It would be far healthier for children if parents could park a little way from the school and walk or scooter to school.  Scooters may be stored at school.  We do not have bicycle storage

Gentle Reminders

Reporting Absences and Pick-up

Reporting Absence

We always require absence information, including unplanned absence, to be reported daily before 9am.

  1. If your child is absent please call the school office before 9am.
  2. Leave a clear message with your child’s full name and class and a brief reason for the absence (e.g. religious holiday).
  3. Unwell pupils: If your child is unwell, we ask that you report your child as off ‘sick’ and briefly describe their sickness (e.g. temperature, headache or has vomited etc). By describing your child’s sickness this will enable the school to track and manage a sudden increase in occurrences of the illness and identify whether we have a localised outbreak of the illness (e.g. virus).

Reporting Pick-Up

If your child is going home with someone different to their regular person collecting them, please remember to communicate arrangements via the admin email before 2:45pm stating your child’s full name and class and who is collecting them.

Please do not email teachers as they are unable to check emails during the teaching day.

*****

For absences and pick-up arrangements report to:

020 8883 3412

admin@tetherdownschool.org

Official Appointments

If your child is going to be absent for an appointment such as:

  • medical (e.g. dentist, hospital appointment) or an
  • an official appointment (e.g. visa application, passport office)

Families must provide proof of the appointment to the school office via email. Please remember to include your child's full name and class in all correspondence.

You do not need to fill in the absence request form for medical appointments, or official appointments.

All other Leave Requests

Please complete an exceptional leave of absence form for all other leave requests. You can find this form on our website under the Parents tab. Click here to go to access online absence request form.

Extra Curricular Club Cancellation

Extracurricular Club Cancellation

Recently, one of our extracurricular club providers needed to cancel their club. Communications are sent to families as soon as we are made aware of cancellations.

Please can families note the process below for any future club cancellations. This information is a standing item in our newsletter and on our website clubs and activity camps page. Thank you in advance.

  • If your child's extracurricular club at the end of the school day is cancelled by the provider, parents are advised to make alternative pick-up arrangements for their child and to notify the school office via email of the new arrangement no later than 2:45pm. Parents should not assume that the Tetherdown after-school club can take their child following a club cancellation if they cannot make alternative pick-up arrangements.

  • Children who normally attend the Tetherdown after-school club directly after the cancelled extracurricular club (e.g. tennis) can go straight to after-school club at the end of the school day, however you will be charged accordingly for this session via ParentPay.

Children Leaving Tetherdown

If you are planning on leaving Tetherdown it is important that you inform the school as soon as possible. Please fill in the destination form which can found on our School Forms & Links page.

Medicines in School

As a reminder that medicine cannot be given to your child to bring into school. The school can administer prescribed medicine only (the parents form on our website must be filled in). Any over the counter medicine must be administered by a parent / nominated carer. Please refer to our Health & Welfare pages for further details.

Forgotten Items

The school does not accept forgotten items. We aim to promote independence and responsibility in our children. This includes snacks and packed lunches, water bottles, PE kits, instruments etc. We can accept medical and reading glasses. If a child has forgotten their lunch one will be provided and will be charged via your ParentPay account.

Unhealthy Treats

We are a healthy school and as such we kindly ask that children do not bring in sweets or cakes/biscuits to hand out to their friends on their birthday. A class book donation is always much appreciated. We will share your book-gift with the class and insert a special book plate to mark the occasion of your child's birthday.
