Headteacher News

Dear Parents and Carers

As we wrap up this school year, I want to share my final thoughts and reflections on an incredible first year as head. These last few weeks have been a whirlwind, filled with joy and memorable moments.

KS1 Sports Day

A big thank you to all parents, children, and especially Coaches Da Silva, Hamadi, and Zack for organizing the KS1 Sports Day. Watching parents support their children with such enthusiasm, donning the same colours and waving banners, was heart warming. I've asked Coach Da Silva to provide a summary of this year's sports achievements, so be sure to read it.

Trips, Workshops, Events and Assemblies

Our dedicated staff have been working tirelessly to organise a variety of trips for the children. These excursions included a fascinating visit to the London Zoo, an educational tour of the British Museum, and a delightful day at Walton-on-the Naze. I had the pleasure of accompanying the children on the Walton trip, where we received numerous compliments from the public on how well-behaved and polite our children were. Additionally, I absolutely adored the recent Orchestra Assembly, where the children's musical talents were on full display, and the Reception Breakfast Assembly, which was a wonderful start to the day.

Another of the highlights was the Year 6 sleepover, expertly organised by Y6 parents led by Katie Betti. Who would have thought my first year as head would include spending a night at school! This was a fantastic event, despite only getting 3 hours of sleep and I'm grateful to everyone involved and the funds raised to support the school.

Our Year 6 students delivered a truly impressive, West End-level production of Oliver! Their dedication, teamwork, creativity, acting, choreography, and technical skills, including scenery, props, sound, and lighting, were awe-inspiring. Special thanks to Mr Buckeridge, Ms Jones, Mr Da Silva, and Ms Nicholls for their exceptional leadership and hard work. We also deeply appreciate the parents for their unwavering support. It was a fantastic production, showcasing the incredible talents of our children and a memorable milestone for them.

Results

Finally, a massive thank you and congratulations to our Year 6 children for their outstanding SATs results and to our Year 2 students for their impressive phonics achievements.

Parent Support

Thank you to the parents who have generously given their time and support to the school in numerous ways. From building a new sandpit in the EYFS playground to sourcing art supplies by reaching out to various suppliers, and even providing an incredible opera experience for Year 1 and Year 3 children, your contributions have been invaluable. We are also deeply grateful to those who have generously donated to our Keep the Lights On Fund.

A special thank you goes to the Friends of Tetherdown for organizing the Silent Disco and the highly successful Summer Fair. The event was filled with joy and excitement, featuring children’s stalls, a delightful choir performance, and an energetic JK dance. Thank you, parents, for the time and effort you dedicated to setting up and managing it all. Your involvement has made a significant difference and will raise significant funds for our school.

Looking ahead

We have made some adjustments to our internal timetable to better support our children's learning and well-being. While we are one of the few schools that still offer an afternoon play, which I am committed to keeping, we have moved our lunchtime to 12:30 pm. This change will require some adaptation, so please ensure your child has a nutritious breakfast. Reception to year 2 students will continue to receive a snack (fruit or vegetables) provided by the government. For year 3 to year 6 students, we recommend sending a substantial, healthy, nut-free snack. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us make this transition smooth and beneficial for the children.

We have an exciting year ahead! The 2024-25 school year will emphasise the social and emotional development of our children, with significant improvements to our playgrounds and play provisions. This initiative is part of an ambitious three-year plan, described by the governors, which I am thrilled about. I will share more details with you in September 2024.

Wishing you all a restful and wonderful summer from myself and all the staff at Tetherdown. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, 4th September. Please encourage your children to send me a postcard from your travels (be it in the UK or abroad)—I would love to hear about their adventures.

Best wishes

Annie Ashraf

Friends of Tetherdown 2023/4 Summary

FoT are delighted that we’ve ended the year on such a high, raising a whopping £15k at the Summer Festival, taking our fundraising for the year to an incredible £65k!

Activities

To achieve our target, we’ve had kids, adults and family events. The kids were wowed by magic, brain-teased by maths and danced like crazy in the playground with their friends at the silent discos. The adults quizzed, danced (whilst bingo-ing), laughed and outbid each other at our wonderful auction and our festivals brought us all together with performances, food, drinks, stalls, games, music and fun!

Funding

Thanks to all this activity, we have managed to improve our children’s school experience in several areas:

  • Sound and Lighting system - new lighting and indoor/outdoor speaker system
  • Outdoor Play & Learning - resurfacing in the upper playground and part of lower playground to be landscaped, (exciting new installations to come!)
  • Technology - new laptops, tablets, and other essential technological tools
  • Music - instruments to expand the programme, with new jazz & samba band.
  • Classroom small wins – New water table, reading corner bean bags, art supplies, light boxes, wet play games and more chosen by our teachers

Thank you

A huge thank you to all the parents and staff of Tetherdown for another amazing year – by attending our events or donating money via JustGiving or direct debit, you have helped to raise these funds and made a real difference to our school.

Special thanks to the class reps, parent volunteers and your donations which make Friends of Tetherdown events happen.

More FoT Members please!

Our committee is made up of a band of 9 merry members in a school of 400 pupils. We’d LOVE to have some new members to join us! We totally get it’s a commitment in this busy life we all lead, but it’s also great to be doing something for our community and helping our amazing underfunded school… and we make it loads of fun!

So, whether you want to join the committee, or simply have an idea to share, or want to sign up to be a regular volunteer for individual events, please get in touch:  TetherdownPSAchair@gmail.com.

Have a great summer!

The FoT

One click in support of children's learning experience

A quick message to remind any of you who can afford anything between £5-50 per month to consider supporting the school in the most amazing way by setting up a direct debit.

It’s the easiest and most effective way to ensure the school has the resources it needs, as government funding hardly covers more than the cost of the teachers themselves.

It’s a really quick thing to set up and the impact on our kids is invaluable. We know times are tough but without the volume of events we had previously, every contribution really makes a difference. Click here to set up a direct debit.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Dear Parents/Carers

Parent Governor Election Ballot Results - July 2024

You will recall that we recently sought nominations for one Parent Governor to join the Governing Body at Tetherdown School. We received two nominations on the closing date, which meant we were required to hold a ballot. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes would secure the role of parent governor for a four-year term of office.

I am delighted to now welcome Kate Towers to the Governing Body. I am confident that she will serve you well and make a positive contribution to the workings of the Governing Body.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this process.

Kind regards

Annie Ashraf

OFFICE REMINDERS

PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE A NO NUTS SCHOOL

Products containing nuts (including for staff as some may also have allergies) must not be brought into school under any circumstances.

Considerate Driving and Parking Please!

If you must drive to school to drop off your child(ren) please consider our neighbours when parking near the school.  We have received complaints that some parents are parking across driveways and blocking house owners in.  It would be far healthier for children if parents could park a little way from the school and walk or scooter to school.  Scooters may be stored at school.  We do not have bicycle storage

Gentle Reminders

Reporting Absences and Pick-up

Reporting Absence

We always require absence information, including unplanned absence, to be reported daily before 9am.

  1. If your child is absent please call the school office before 9am.
  2. Leave a clear message with your child’s full name and class and a brief reason for the absence (e.g. religious holiday).
  3. Unwell pupils: If your child is unwell, we ask that you report your child as off ‘sick’ and briefly describe their sickness (e.g. temperature, headache or has vomited etc). By describing your child’s sickness this will enable the school to track and manage a sudden increase in occurrences of the illness and identify whether we have a localised outbreak of the illness (e.g. virus).

Reporting Pick-Up

If your child is going home with someone different to their regular person collecting them, please remember to communicate arrangements via the admin email before 2:45pm stating your child’s full name and class and who is collecting them.

Please do not email teachers as they are unable to check emails during the teaching day.

*****

For absences and pick-up arrangements report to:

020 8883 3412

admin@tetherdownschool.org

Official Appointments

If your child is going to be absent for an appointment such as:

  • medical (e.g. dentist, hospital appointment) or an
  • an official appointment (e.g. visa application, passport office)

Families must provide proof of the appointment to the school office via email. Please remember to include your child's full name and class in all correspondence.

You do not need to fill in the absence request form for medical appointments, or official appointments.

All other Leave Requests

Please complete an exceptional leave of absence form for all other leave requests. You can find this form on our website under the Parents tab. Click here to go to access online absence request form.

Extra Curricular Club Cancellation

Extracurricular Club Cancellation

Please can families note the process below for any future club cancellations. This information is a standing item in our newsletter and on our website clubs and activity camps page. Thank you in advance.

  • If your child's extracurricular club at the end of the school day is cancelled by the provider, parents are advised to make alternative pick-up arrangements for their child and to notify the school office via email of the new arrangement no later than 2:45pm. Parents should not assume that the Tetherdown after-school club can take their child following a club cancellation if they cannot make alternative pick-up arrangements.

  • Children who normally attend the Tetherdown after-school club directly after the cancelled extracurricular club (e.g. tennis) can go straight to after-school club at the end of the school day, however you will be charged accordingly for this session via ParentPay.

Children Leaving Tetherdown

If you are planning on leaving Tetherdown it is important that you inform the school as soon as possible. Please fill in the destination form which can found on our School Forms & Links page.

Medicines in School

As a reminder that medicine cannot be given to your child to bring into school. The school can administer prescribed medicine only (the parents form on our website must be filled in). Any over the counter medicine must be administered by a parent / nominated carer. Please refer to our Health & Welfare pages for further details.

Forgotten Items

The school does not accept forgotten items. We aim to promote independence and responsibility in our children. This includes snacks and packed lunches, water bottles, PE kits, instruments etc. We can accept medical and reading glasses. If a child has forgotten their lunch one will be provided and will be charged via your ParentPay account.

Unhealthy Treats

We are a healthy school and as such we kindly ask that children do not bring in sweets or cakes/biscuits to hand out to their friends on their birthday. A class book donation is always much appreciated. We will share your book-gift with the class and insert a special book plate to mark the occasion of your child's birthday.
