Headteacher News

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome back after the summer break.  It’s been really lovely seeing the children return, and they are settling so well to their new classes.  A special welcome to those who are new to Tetherdown.  I hope you will enjoy being involved in our community and make some great connections with families over the coming weeks.

It’s always a good time to revisit our expectations as we start a new academic year and thank you to those parents and carers who have recently joined us for Meet n Greets with your child’s class teacher(s).  Your support is vital to our success, and we look forward to building positive relationships over the course of the year to ensure your child can Be the Best they can Be.  Our values, outlined here, describe how we will work with all members of our community to ensure successful outcomes for all:

Lead with kindness,

Feel the laughter,

Inspire achievement,

Nurture friendships,

Share the magic...

Exceed expectations!

I hope that every parent and carer ascribes to our values.

Unfortunately, some staff have faced real concern regarding the issue of communication, which is already beginning to cause increasing levels of anxiety across the school.  Sadly, some parents are actually being quite rude in their email and verbal communication to staff.  Class Teachers and Admin staff have felt threatened as they manage an increasing number of challenging telephone conversations.  This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.  We are here to help and will always do our very best to support you.  If you have a concern, please raise this respectfully and with compassion for those involved.  I know life is challenging for many of us.  Please, let’s be supportive and understanding of one another.  There will always be a solution and a way forward which we can work out together.

I would like to remind all parents and carers that school STARTS at 8.50am – not 8.55, not 9.00, not anytime after this.  Gates are open for children to enter the playgrounds in plenty of time.  The gates will close at 8.55am.  Children arriving late should report to the office so that we can track their attendance.  This causes severe disruption to the smooth running of the school office but more importantly if your child arrives late, they will often feel anxious about joining their class when all their friends are settled – your child won’t know what the expectations are for the morning.  They are playing catch up and this impacts on their learning – every time they are late to school.

On a more positive note I would like to thank all those parents who have signed up to The School Fund.  Your very kind donations are very much appreciated.  You will remember at the end of the summer term we asked you to consider making a regular monthly donation so that the school can continue to provide an exciting and stimulating education for every child.  You can find details on how to donate in our Funding letter also available on our website under Parents/School Communications/Key letters & Presentations, and quickly set up your donations, here, too for ease:

Please click one of the links below to set up of your monthly Direct Debit donation:

  • To donate £10 go cardless
  • To donate £30 to cardless
  • To donate £50 go cardless

You may be aware that we have some wonderful mature fruit trees in our grounds; apple, quince, damson and crab apple.  We would like to welcome you in to school on Saturday, 24th September between 10am-12noon when we will open the gates on the lower playground allowing you to pick as much of this fruit as you wish.  All we would ask is that you make a small voluntary donation back to the school for your produce. We have set up a voluntary ParentPay payment item for your fruit donation. Please note due to works taking place school toilets will be unavailable to use. If you would like to sign up for fruit picking click here.

Finally, please hold these dates in your diary:

  • Friday, 23rd September from 8:50am-9:30am - Parent Coffee and Taster Morning in the Hall.
  • Friday, 7th October from 2:45pm-3:30pm - Y1-6 Open Afternoon and Olive Dining Taster session in the Hall.
  • Tuesday, 11th and Wednesday 19th October from 4pm- 7:30pm - Y1-6 Online autumn term Parent Consultations and SEND Open Door. Information about how to register for our consultations via School Interviews will be sent out in due course.

We are really looking forward to working with you.  If you should have any questions regarding events or activities please remember to check our school website before ringing the school.  Should you have a concern regarding your child we ask that you follow these lines of communication:

Class Teacher > Phase Leader > Senior Leadership Team > Headteacher.  A copy of our staff list and their roles can be viewed on our website staff page.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Kind regards

Tony Woodward

One click in support of children's learning experience

A quick message to remind any of you who can afford anything between £5-50 per month to consider supporting the school in the most amazing way by setting up a direct debit.

It’s the easiest and most effective way to ensure the school has the resources it needs, as government funding hardly covers more than the cost of the teachers themselves.

It’s a really quick thing to set up and the impact on our kids is invaluable. We know times are tough but without the volume of events we had previously, every contribution really makes a difference. Click here to set up a direct debit.

Thanks in advance for your support.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Polio vaccination campaign

Polio virus is spreading in London, so children aged one to nine are the focus of a polio vaccination campaign to ensure that they are protected from catching the virus. Children who are up-to-date with their routine vaccines are being offered a booster vaccine. Parents of children who are not up-to-date are being urged to contact their GP to get their child protected from polio and a range of other potentially dangerous diseases with their routine vaccinations.

Poliovirus is a life-threatening infection of the nerves that can cause serious disability, permanent paralysis or even death. Polio is preventable and vaccination is the best protection against the disease. All children in England are offered five doses of polio vaccine as part of the routine NHS
vacination schedule:

  • Babies are given jabs to protect against polio and other diseases at the age of eight weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks.
  • A booster given at three years and four months keeps them protected for longer.
  • A final booster at around 14 years old keeps them protected for life.

If your child hasn’t had all of their jabs, contact your doctor today to get them protected.

In Haringey, a polio booster walk-in clinic is available at Hornsey Central Vaccination Centre. This clinic is for children aged six to nine years, who are up-to-date with their routine childhood vaccinations.

The clinic is open seven days a week from 3pm-8pm Monday to Friday and from 8am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Follow this link for more information, including what you need to bring with you visit.

Books of Condolence for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Books of Condolences are available to sign in person or electronically (via a Royal Mail link).  Books are held at Haringey libraries and at a two other Haringey buildings across the borough – Bruce Castle Museum and George Meehan House (formally Woodside House)

Key information on paying tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II can be found here.

On the occasion of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, Philip Larkin wrote of her reign:

“In times when nothing stood,

but worsened or grew strange,

there was one constant good:

she did not change.”

Next Generation of Choristers

St Paul’s Cathedral is looking for the next generation of choristers to sing in its world-famous Choir. This is an amazing opportunity for those who have a passion for music and singing and would thrive in a boarding environment.

At the moment they are only auditioning for boy choristers. They will hold auditions for a new girls’ choir in early 2025 once the fundraising and necessary building work has been completed.

Not only do the Choristers of St Paul’s receive intensive training in music but they join a stimulating, thriving and loving School and have the experience of a new, beautifully designed and equipped Boarding House.

The process by which St Paul's consider children is explained here –

www.spcslondon.com/choristers/admissions-process

There is a ‘Being a Chorister’ experience on Zoom on Wednesday 21st September at 6.30pm which includes a singing session, information about the life of the choristers, film footage of the Boarding House and Cathedral and the opportunity to ask questions. These sessions take place throughout the school year.

Parents can book a place by contacting Angela Palotai at apalotai@stpaulscathedral.org.uk

MANAGING COVID-19

Symptoms, Testing and Guidance for COVID-19

For symptoms, testing and guidance for COVID-19 please refer to our COVID-19 website pages which contain information that we hope parents find helpful and useful including:

  • How to report a positive CIVID-19 test.
  • Timeline for isolation.
  • My child has tested positive - what happens next?
  • COVID-19 links to guidance, advise and FAQ.

We appreciate that there may at times be some confusion on ways to respond, but we are doing our best to ensure as many children can come to school on a regular basis so that risks to your child’s continuing education in the current climate is reduced.

OFFICE REMINDERS

PLEASE REMEMBER WE ARE A NO NUTS SCHOOL (green)

Products containing nuts (including for staff as some may also have allergies) must not be brought into school under any circumstances

Considerate Driving and Parking Please!

If you must drive to school to drop off your child(ren) please consider our neighbours when parking near the school.  We have received complaints that some parents are parking across driveways and blocking house owners in.  It would be far healthier for children if parents could park a little way from the school and walk or scooter to school.  Scooters may be stored at school.  We do not have bicycle storage

Parent Communication to Tetherdown

Parents will receive an email from platform@parentpay.com - when you receive messages from this email you can be assured this is an official direct school communication.

Parents are advised to set up text and email alerts to ensure that you do not miss any important information from Tetherdown. Details of how to do this can be found on our Payment & Bookings System pages. If you have missed an email please search your mailbox for platform@parentpay.com messages and check junk mail.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Extracurricular Club Cancellation

This week one of our extracurricular club providers cancelled their club. Please can families note the process below for any future cancellations. Thank you in advance.

  • If your child's extracurricular club at the end of the school day is cancelled by the provider, parents are advised to make alternative pick-up arrangements for their child and to notify the school office via email of the new arrangement no later than 2:45pm. Parents should not assume that the Tetherdown after-school club can take their child following a club cancellation if they cannot make alternative pick-up arrangements.

  • Children who normally attend the Tetherdown after-school club directly after the cancelled extracurricular club (e.g. tennis) can go straight to after-school club at the end of the school day, however you will be charged accordingly for this session via ParentPay.

Official Appointments

If your child is going to be absent for medical or official appointment you must provide proof of the appointment to the school office via email. Please remember to include your child's full name and class in all correspondence.

As a reminder that medicine cannot be given to your child to bring into school. The school can administer prescribed medicine only (the parents form on our website must be filled in). Any over the counter medicine must be administered by a parent / nominated carer. Please refer to our Health & Welfare pages for further details.

If a child has forgotten their lunch one will be provided and will be charged via your ParentPay account.

Unhealthy Treats

We are a healthy school and as such we kindly ask that children do not bring in sweets or cakes/biscuits to hand out to their friends on their birthday.
