News Round- Up

Dear Parents and Carers

Christmas preparations are well underway here at Tetherdown. The children and staff are very excited to be celebrating and having fun as we reach the end of what has been a very busy term.

Well done Year 2 – amazing Phonics Check results showing 95% of the children who took the test met the standard. This is only a 2% difference on our latest published data for 2019.  Well done children – all your learning and effort has paid off.  I am very proud of you.  A massive thank you to the staff who have worked so hard to ensure our children are developing their phonological awareness and building on effective spelling techniques as they go through Year 2 and in to Juniors next year.

As we approach the end of term we would very much like to invite you to our Christmas Sing Song which will take place at pick-up on the following dates:

  • Years 1, 2 and 3 - Wednesday 15th December - 3.15pm – Infant Playground
  • Years 4, 5 and 6 - Thursday 16th December - 3.25pm – Junior Playground

The children will sing a short selection of Christmas Songs which is why you are invited to join us at a slightly earlier time.  You are most welcome to join in with the songs, too.  We hope this will bring some Christmas spirit to our end of term preparations.

On the theme of Christmas, I would like to say a big thank you to the parents who gave up their time in the last few days to come in and decorate our wonderful Christmas Trees, which were very kindly donated to the school by “Christmas on the Hill”.  Both our trees look amazing and have really helped us to get in the Christmas mood.

Should you need a quick reminder of when your child’s Christmas Party, Christmas Jumper Day and Christmas Lunch will take placed calendar dates are listed at the bottom of this newsletter.

Whilst we continue to enjoy the rest of term, please be mindful of covid restrictions, in particular the concerns regarding the new Omicron variant.  We have updated our risk assessment in response to revised government and Public Health guidelines and this is available on the school website covid-19 page for your information.  Please continue to support the school in managing and communicating covid cases by completing the online form available via the school website.  We will be monitoring until Wednesday 23rd December and checking at 11.00am each day for cases.  You will only be advised of necessary action should you be contacted.

And finally, I would like to say what an absolute pleasure it was to watch the Reception Classes’ Nativity this week.  We enjoyed the beautiful singing, we could hear every word and all the children looked amazing in their costumes.  Such a lot of hard work goes into these performances and a special thank you must go to staff who have worked so hard in the last few weeks to prepare the children.  Thank you parents for your support, too. You should be very proud.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a wonderful Christmas break.

Kind regards

Tony Woodward

Headteacher

Reception Nativity

After weeks of practise, Reception presented two performances of their amazing Nativity. The children were true performers and learned 7 songs and confidently spoke their lines in front of the audience. Our stars and angels even did a little dance! We were so proud of every child as they tried their best and all joined in with great enthusiasm. Thank you also to our wonderful Reception parents who helped the children learn their lines and arranged costumes.

Room on the Broom Assembly

On Thursday 2nd December, Year 1 performed their assembly to many wonderful Year 1 parents in the hall. They really enjoyed acting out this exciting story by Julia Donaldson. The children were dressed up as witches, cats, dogs, birds and frogs. Lots of children said they especially loved singing to their parents. Thank you to everyone who came to see us – the children had a fabulous time!

OTHER NEWS AND EVENTS

Year 5 - Sam Reaches London Chess Finals!!

Well done to Yr5 Sam who has qualified for the prestigious London Junior Chess Championship U10 Finals taking place later in December.

The LJCC Finals will have some of the best junior chess players from across London and the neighbouring counties taking part.

Sam has done really well to reach the Finals. We are really proud of his achievement and wish him well for the Finals.

Year 5 - WW2 Day

On the 2nd of December, Year 5 were incredibly lucky to experience WW2 day. They came to school dressed as evacuees and marvelled at each other's fabulous outfits. Whilst filling out their identity cards, the children heard the sudden piercing shriek of an air raid siren echoed across the room. Safely and sensibly, the children ‘ducked and covered’ under their tables. After this, they were sent to the town hall, where they were billeted to either Wales (aka the music room), Cornwall (aka the Chameleons classroom) or Devon (aka the Komodo's classroom).

In Wales, the children encountered a land girl called Rosie (Ms Binger) where they played ‘Call my bluff’. In this game, players were given a mystery WW2 artefact, and had to present 3 bluffs and a truth of what the item could have been used for during WW2. Then the opposing teams had to try and guess which one is correct. The Children had so much fun trying to decipher the truths. In Devon, another land girl called Lotte (Ms Edireweera) taught the children how to make a propaganda poster in the style of Fougasse’s  posters. The Children loved creating their own “Careless talk cost lives” scenarios. In Cornwall, the Children joined the secret services and were taught by Neville Chamberlin (Mr Venn) how to crack codes. They made their own Enigma machine and then used it to crack the cipher.

At the end of the day, the children learnt about the local history of Muswell Hill and the fantastic achievements of Dame Steve Shirley.

Year 5 would also like to say a big thank you to all the parents, who visited us to share their family history during this topic. The children have loved hearing about all the incredible journeys that the grandparents and great-grandparents had been through.
